About us

The Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) was established in 1949 by the Gold Coast Ordinance CAP 118 and came into effect in January, 1950. The Ordinance was re-enacted as the Ghana Library Board Act, 1970 (Act 327 to establish, equip, manage and maintain public libraries in Ghana. Ghana has a network of 61 libraries across the country.

Vision & Mission

The vision of GhLA is to connect every Ghanaian to knowledge resources.

The mission of GhLA is to be a leading knowledge services hub in the sub region by connecting all citizenry to knowledge resources to radically improve literacy and development outcomes which transforms lives and communities.

About the Year of Reading

Year of Reading is nationwide initiative of Ghana Library Authority with support of the Ministry of Education, under the theme ‘Reading for Progress’. The year long campaign to promote a culture of reading and reignite Ghana’s passion for literature will be launched on 19th Feburary 2019 by the First Lady of the Republic of Ghana , H.E Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo and the Deputy Minister of Education, Hon Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

The Year long activity is set out under five objectives:

  • Promoting literacy and life-long learning
  • Introducing new access points for the public to engage with GhLA libraries
  • Creating an enabling environment for learning across public library network
  • Improving book collection
  • Increasing accessibility to reading materials through technology

Ghana Library Authority has developed varied materials to help parents, schools, and corporations to promote reading.
